Signs the remedy is working

How patients respond to homeopathic treatment and the speed of their outcomes is also idiosyncratic.

It is Important that for chronic conditions a period of weeks is given for the action of the remedy to reveal itself. For some, who are sensitive to energy and vibrational medicines the effects can be significant and profound, while for others, (especially where there are maintaining causes) the changes can feel mild or even imperceptible.

It often happens that some presenting symptoms at the first consultation disappear from consciousness and are forgotten until brought up again at a follow up. I see this as a positive healing marker and a reflection of why a thorough homeopathic enquiry is required at the very start.

How Healing Can Unfold After a Remedy

.Healing is rarely linear. After a homeopathic prescription, change may unfold gradually, in layers, or in stages. Some shifts are clear and tangible; others are subtle. Understanding the range of possible responses helps us observe with care and avoid premature conclusions. Below are some of the ways healing may unfold:

  • Your main reason for seeking treatment has shown improvement. And your symptoms disappear.
  • You feel better in yourself. Somehow you feel right, like your old self. Your spirit has come back, you are more confident. Feelings like this are a sure sign.
  • You’re able to deal with challenges in life more effectively and experience less stress and triggering.
  • A greater sense of agency may emerge: clearer thinking, steadier emotional responses, and the ability to shift patterns that once felt entrenched.
  • You have more energy, and are able to do more.
  • You feel more joyful.
  • You can take steps to make changes in your life such as leave a toxic situation, or connect with your social circle, etc.
  • Your attitude toward work, or toward colleagues, friends or family changes and you see life differently.
  • You become more creative.

Aggravations

Sometimes, a temporary intensification of existing symptoms can occur after a remedy. When mild and short-lived, this is often understood in homeopathy as a sign that the remedy is acting. Temporary worsening should not be confused with side effects, but observed carefully within the overall pattern of change.

In my practice, I aim to minimise strong aggravations by prescribing liquid remedies taken over time, using a method known as succussion.

An aggravation may present as a brief increase in familiar symptoms, or as heightened activity through the body’s natural outlets — such as changes in bowel function, urination, skin eruptions, fever, or nasal discharge. In cases where symptoms are spasmodic, such as asthma or headaches, episodes may recur more mildly, becoming shorter and less frequent over time.

A short return of previous symptoms, particularly those that were suppressed, can also occur. In some cases, symptoms may resolve in a recognisable order — often described in homeopathy as moving from more vital organs to less vital ones, or from deeper to more external expressions.

As an aggravation settles, improvement should follow. Repetition of the remedy is usually only considered when progress stalls or symptoms begin to return. Future aggravations can often be moderated by adjusting potency or dosing frequency.

When a Remedy May Not Be the Right Fit

Not every prescription leads to meaningful improvement. Sometimes there is no observable shift over time, which may suggest that the remedy does not sufficiently match the case.

Occasionally, entirely new and sustained symptoms may arise that do not belong to the person’s previous pattern. When this occurs, it is usually an indication that the remedy should be reassessed.

If symptoms intensify without subsequent improvement, or if the overall direction of change appears to move away from balance rather than toward it, careful review is important. In some situations, it may be appropriate to pause, wait, or consider adjusting the prescription.

Homeopathy relies not only on selecting a remedy, but on observing its effect over time. Ongoing assessment helps ensure that treatment remains aligned with the individual’s unfolding picture.

Overdosing/Proving

In homeopathy ‘overdose’ doesn’t mean toxicity as in conventional medicine. It refers to excess stimulation -where symptoms can temporarily intensify or shift because the dose was too frequent/strong for the person’s sensitivity. This isn’t dangerous but it can feel uncomfortable or confusing.

In homeopathic terms, a ‘Proving’ is the appearance of remedy-specific symptoms in a person who does not need that remedy. This can happen intentionally (in organised provings, under protocol). It can also happen unintentionally, when a remedy is taken too frequently, for too long, or at too high a potency for that individual.

Unlike healing aggravations, which often involve a brief return of old symptoms, overdosing or proving is more likely to involve new, unfamiliar symptoms that were not part of the original picture.

Therefore, the key difference between overdosing and a proving is intent and context, not the phenomenon itself.

The Value of Ongoing Review

Homeopathic treatment unfolds over time, and careful observation is central to the process. Follow-up appointments create space to reflect on what has changed, what has stabilised, and what may need adjustment.

While many people use homeopathy independently for minor or acute concerns, chronic prescribing involves recognising patterns, assessing the direction of change, and distinguishing between healing responses, aggravations, and indications for revision. It is not simply about selecting a remedy, but about understanding how a person’s system is responding over time.

An experienced homeopath supports this process by interpreting these changes in context, helping treatment remain steady, proportionate, and appropriately timed.

When the Heat Takes Its Toll

After weeks of sustained heat, some of us recover quickly while others notice that sleep, energy, digestion or mood remain altered. This article explores why our responses to heat can be so different, and how individualised homeopathy may offer support when we haven’t quite returned to our usual state.
